Our Story

Trio Camino was launched in early 2015, when Michael Nigro joined the established duo of David Grimes and Gregory Newton.  The Trio has already gained an enviable reputation for intensely musical performances of uniquely colorful programs.  

David Grimes and Gregory Newton have performed together since the mid-1990s.  Their concerts have been received enthusiastically throughout North America and Europe, and they were recently featured at the First International Cape Town Guitar Festival in South Africa.  This season they are joined by recording artist Michael Nigro to form the Trio Camino, presenting exciting programs of classical guitar solos, duets and trios. 
 
David Grimes
 
David Grimes has performed extensively throughout North America, South America, Europe and Africa as a soloist, in chamber ensembles and with symphony orchestras.  He is Music Director and Principal Conductor of the acclaimed Orange County Guitar Orchestra.
 
David’s edition of Luys Milán: the Complete Fantasías and the celebrated series, Treasures of the Baroque, are published by Mel Bay Publications, and his Mel Bay editions of The Complete Sor Studies and The Complete Giuliani Studies are staples of the teaching repertoire.  David’s original compositions are now being performed by prominent guitarists throughout the world.  Three collections of his works, Islands, 24 Preludes and As Ondas Verdes are now published by Editions Doberman-Yppan.
 
Highly respected as a teacher and coach, David was Director of Guitar Studies at California State University, Fullerton, where he developed one of the nation’s leading centers of guitar instruction.  For eighteen years David was President of the Guitar Foundation of America and now continues as Reviews Editor for the journal Soundboard.
 
Gregory Newton
 
Dr. Gregory Newton has given concerts, masterclasses and broadcasts throughout the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Western and Eastern Europe, South America and the Middle East.  He has several recordings to his credit, including Romancero Gitano with the Los Angeles Chamber Singers.
 
Dr. Newton is on the faculties of Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Valley College and Glendale College, teaching guitar, music theory and music appreciation, and is the classical guitar instructor on VideoGuitarLessons.com.
 
He is president of the American Guitar Society, director of the AGS International Concert Series and a former member of the GFA Board of Directors.  He has been a frequent contributor to guitar periodicals, and adjudicates on national and international competitions.
 
Michael Nigro
 
Michael Anthony Nigro has performed across the United States and in South America, giving concerts and master classes for numerous universities, performing arts canters, church concert series, guitar societies, libraries and museums, including the Auditorio Juan Victoria in San Juan, Argentina, the Salon Parroquial Conciertos “El Rincón” in Villa-General Belgrano, Argentina and guitar societies in Portland, Sacramento, Colorado Springs, Jefferson, Knoxville, Bloomington and Ventura County. 
 
Michael’s discography includes “Homage to Piazzolla,” which received critical acclaim from the American Record Guide and Classical Guitar Magazine, “Guitar Sudamericana,” featuring the compositions of José Luis Merlín, Jorge Morel, Eduardo Falú, Antonio Lauro and Heitor Villa-Lobos.  Most recently, “A Journey through Latin America” showcases music by Gentil Montaña, Isáac Albéniz, Francisco Tárrega and José Luis Merlín.
 
Michael directs the guitar program at Vanguard University, where he has established a comprehensive curriculum that includes Guitar Literature, Pedagogy, Fretboard Techniques and Guitar Ensemble.  He is co-author of “The Essential Classical Guitar Scale Book.”
